Little did I know that one of the world's four major Gothic cathedrals with an all-stone structure is right here in Guangzhou! The other three, though, you must have heard of: Notre-Dame de Paris, Westminster Abbey in London, and Cologne Cathedral.
Our city's Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou was laid in 1863 and completed in 1888, taking 25 years to build.
After walking around it, I was absolutely amazed by its beauty!
Though designed by the French, Chinese architects still incorporated many Eastern elements into it. Look up, and you'll see that the water spouts on the columns are stone lions with their mouths open; many of the stone carvings also have a touch of Lingnan style.
